Fiat Chrysler Automobiles First Domestic To Score Top Quality Ratings

The highly regarded J.D. Power 2020 Initial Quality Study (IQS),SM released last week had Dodge and Kia tied for the highest score, making Dodge the first domestic brand in history to top the ratings.

Now in its 34th year the JD Power study tracks problems experienced by owners of new model-year vehicles during the first 90 days of ownership. The survey is based on the number of problems experienced per 100 vehicles (PP100), with a lower score reflecting higher quality.

For the Dodge Division of FCA this award is a vindication of its aging fleet with its best selling Charger and Challenger muscle car architecture largely unchanged for the past 12 – 14 years.

Also noteworthy from FCA is the intro of a class-exclusive new AWD system for its 2020 Chrysler Pacifica Touring L model ahead of a comprehensively updated 2021 edition. If the wheels lose traction the new AWD system automatically transfers engine torque power to the wheels with the most grip. The new system also engages and shuts off the AWD system automatically as needed.

While the mini-van segment carries the cultural baggage of being the vehicle of harried soccer Moms and screaming kids, since 2017 the new Pacifica has hit target sales of 100,000 plus units per year.

Though the Pacifica has distinguished itself as the mini-van with SUV handling traits, a 2021 feature that allows front seat video viewing of the kids in the two back rows is a nod to its roots as a family hauler.
