The explosive demand for mid-size luxury Crossover SUVs over the last two decades can be traced back to the 1998 Lexus RX300. It was an idea not warmly welcomed by auto industry wags including some of the motor press.

But the public was ready for the luxury amenities and convenience combo of a car based crossover SUV, and the RX series has been a top performer in the segment while notables like Mercedes, BMW, Audi, Volvo, Lincoln, Cadillac and now Genesis have muscled in for market share.

The latest edition is the bold and boisterous Lexus RX 500 F Sport Performance AWD. With a 2.4 L 4-cylinder 271 horsepower gas plant boosted by 288 Volt battery electric motors … this 4,750 lb pampered wagon boasts a bare-knuckled 367 horsepower.

Inside the tech array is a tad intimidating but the 14” screen infotainment command and control central screen is a big improvement in this model. From a premium standards vantage point Lexus is at the top of its game for quality touch and feel interior, supportive heated and cooled seating, and a comprehensive safety suite for $62,000 MSRP.
