Pickup Truck Sales Barrel Through Crisis Leading All Categories
In yet another paradox of the automotive marketplace, during a time when most of us are not going anywhere, the biggest beasts on the dealership lots are the best sellers … with pickup trucks actually selling more than all other classes of passenger vehicles combined for the first time in history.
Data confirms that suburban Boomer and Gen X buyers account for the appeal for the big Ford F-150, RAM 1500, Chevrolet Silverado pickups, which are being sold increasingly as a consumer alternative to a full sized SUVs. In the pick-up showdown Chevrolet Silverado is the top seller after a two year lag.
To attract younger buyers the newly re-invigorated mid-sized truck market is hot again, though it had never been ceded by the durably popular Toyota Tacoma, Nissan Frontier and the Honda Ridgeline.
In the drive to make mid-sized pickups great again, the Chevrolet Colorado has taken a long ramp up lead, in face of the intro last year of the new wild card favorite Jeep Gladiator. The highly anticipated Ford Ranger mid-size pick-up has struggled to meet sales targets but gets good test drive results.
