Hyundai Group Metaplant Under Construction Near Savannah, Georgia

The new Hyundai Ioniq 6 EV intro would be newsworthy enough as the Ioniq 5 ran away with all the major awards in recent years, posing a credible threat to the Tesla EV juggernaut.

A recent press trip visit to Savannah, GA was a combined Ioniq 6 ride and drive, and industrial development presentation, as plans were unveiled for a sprawling Hyundai Motor Group battery and EV components manufacturing facility that is estimated to occupy over 5,000 acres 30 minutes west of the city. This meta-plant will employ 4,000 workers, boosting company annual EV capacity to 300,000 a year.

As a Hyundai Motor Group project supporting Hyundai, Kia and Genesis electric vehicles, the facilities will also house 6 or more major suppliers.

This estimated $4.3 billion investment is of course a boon to Georgia and the rest of the mid-south economies, where foreign carmakers from Mercedes-Benz and BMW to Nissan and VW have set up one of the world’s largest auto manufacturing regions, even rivaling Detroit in its heyday.

With the focus on EV and onboard tech, LG Solutions has recently taken a substantial partnership in this deal.
